If u look carefully the h home spec says all front doors fitted with fire safety lock AND UPPER AND LOWER BOLTS. If u don't want to change the lock then get Harron to fit the bolts like they should have done. There's also so much more stuff in the standard spec that nobody got at Harron such as a shelf above the water tank for storing towels etc.

I always get a bit nervous about that chap selling locks to over 80% of the houses on the estate... I always worry that the locks might actually come with 4 keys... and he's going to sell a key to hundreds of people's houses (including addresses) to a professional burglar in 2 years time for 20 grand and run away to Barbados! I know just my overactive mind, but it's a interesting thought :-) ?? just what we thought.

What else was there?

Manual slide bolts or key operated ones? Either way it's more faff. The idea behind the thumb lock is so that in the event of a fire people can open the door quickly without a key. But people can also break the glass in the door, lean in and unlock your door when you are out. If the bolts that are meant to be fitted are manually operated from the inside then they will be no use against this sort of attack. I would advise changing the lock to a non thumblock version. If at night, for piece of mind you want the quick exit option without having to search for keys, keep a key in the lock. This is basically all the thumb lock is anyway. But when you are out take the key out and jobs a good'un. It's no longer possible to break the glass and lean in to unlock the door (or operate the thumb lock via the letter box which is the other trick.thieves use) Also your doors will have built in shoot bolts/levers so external bolts are not necessary.

All this about Phil keeping a key for each lock is a bit too far. You could make the same comment about any locksmiths. They go on their reputation and on trust. Still better than a thumb lock which any old crook can get past, you can but things on eBay which unlock them through the letter box. Sweet dreams Waverley. X

I don't think anyone REALLY thinks that's the case. It's just quite an amusing thought :-)
It would probably make a good film!

It was just something to think about martin. Neither Paul or I were seriously suggesting he's going to runaway with your keys. There are a lot of situations where you have to put your trust in other people to do a job that you can't do yourself. This is different and no harder than building Lego. Just trying to make people aware and save them money.

He did show me the box and the keys as well as he was installing it as you mentioned. For the sake of ten pounds I would rather pay someone else to do it in half the time it would take me.

Make sure changing your locks doesn't void your insurance, these locks have to be put in due to fire regulations. If it does you may have to put a chain on ??

The locks that Harron put on void your insurance from the start as the normal lock that the insurance cover is to have a key that can go in both sides. The ones that Harron fit only go in one side so insurance would be void if there was a break in x

Yep no probs his number is 07721392241 or 01977 610021 his names Phil Simpson. He's on the estate at the moment and probably will be coming your way over the next couple of days as he said he only works evenings and weekends, it was around 6pm when he came to us. Defo worth getting though xx He turned up at our house last night and his sales pitch was disgusting. I told him I wan't interested in taking his product and he left by saying ' well good luck on not getting burguled then' and pulled the flyer from my hand with asking and walked off. I think he is a total a*se. I found him to be bullish and unpleasant. In the past I've watched him work his way past front doors along our street and I'm going to report him to trading standards and complain to TW about the way he is scaremongering. my wife was listening to the conversation behind me and she was incensed by his approach. Can anyone give me the name of his company in a private message please. I know he reads the forum and that's our experience of him.

Not sure on his trading name, isn't it garagelock man or something similar.
He knocked on my door a while back. I just told him that I had already changed my locks so didn't require his services.
He said ok and moved on to the next house.
If you do want to change your locks it's pretty straightforward. I'm happy to offer advice on how to do it.
