Hi all
A friend and I are considering getting a couple of mountain bikes for some light riding. Only short journeys with no extreme terrain as yet. Rides to Rother Valley or round our lakes etc.
I have no idea where to even start as I haven't had a bike since I was about 13/14. Could anyone give any advice on what to look for, recommendations or even if you have something you are wanting to sell?!
I'm not looking to spend much at the minute, I would say £200 would be my maximum.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Dan, you'll not get a lot for £200 apart from a Halfords special, which may suit light riding but it'll be heavy. If I were you I'd have a look on eBay for Scott, Marin, Specialised, Trek, GT (for example) and see what you can pick up 2nd hand. I'd try and get front suspension but you don't need rear. Cheers.

Hi Dan, I agree with Davsur. I had a Halfords special and it was terrible- the gears were awful and it was heavy but it looked nice! I would go second hand but better quality. I have a Trek now and love it. Good luck.

Hi Dan If you look out for new 2013/2014 or discontinued models that local bike shops and online retailers are heavily discounting you'll make your £200 go a lot further than for a comparible 2015 bike. They tend to have very limited stock so it's a bit of a lottery finding one the right size for you but if you do it can be worthwhile. Winstanleys, langsett cycles, tredz and JE James have a few priced between £150 and £250 at the moment. If you buy local you normally get a 6 week check thrown in as well to make sure everything's working as it should be, in that price range though all the running gear is pretty much of a muchness. Like Dave and Alison said, try for a front suspension fork and aluminium frame if possible, or a lightly used second hand one. Hope that helps

This years models will start to go on sale around August time so def worth having a look online at the websites mentioned. JE James is pretty good at Rotherham.
