walking along Bradfield this evening and I noticed a few houses that have bricked up windows. Anyone know why?

To save on window tax I reckon! :-)

I think your talking about the Salcombe's - the original verion of the houses (near the top of Bradfield Way) have windows. But they changed the style slightly and the newer style don't have the windows (although the brickwork / frame still seems to be there!)

This is something which I've always wanted an answer too! It's not just Harron who do this, I first noticed it on a Barratt estate in 2008, since then if you watch on all new build estates you will see a few examples of houses with the outline for a window, the sill in place etc but it's bricked! It's BIZARRE.... it's clearly done on purpose, not just an after thought or forgetting about a change in design.... If you accidentally put a window in, you wouldn't then do it on the next 10 houses over 6 months and keep saying oops.... You wouldn't put sills in etc, you would brick it properly and rectify it properly! Answers on a postcard from those in the know!

Is it just aesthetics? Makes a run of brickwork a little more interesting to look at?

Also could it be planning / cost related?
You cant have windows in certain positions if there are other properties in close proximity etc
I always just thought they did it so that they only need to design one house and can use it on many developments but configure it to suit its position within each development?
At the end of the day its about reducing costs and maximising profit....if you only need to add or remove some bricks to suit, its cheaper than re designing each time, getting plans approved etc.

I might be wrong, maybe its cheaper to mess about with all that somehow but it just seems very odd.... Like I say, others do it... here are a couple of Barratt ones Ive seen before years ago, just pulled them from street view.... why would you do it!

I agree it looks really odd. Like it's a mistake that's been covered up. It's got to be deliberate.

It might have something to do with how the developers apply for planning permission and the diesgn of the houses that are included in the application. Once approved, the builders have to stick with the specs of those houses, even though changed things like the layout of the house internally or supplier of windows changes, etc. My 2 pence worth - a complete stab in the dark - so i could be completely wrong!
