Hi everyone! We are going to be joining the community in the not so distant future , and just wondered if we could pick your brains in relation to some of the things we need to consider. First one being optional extras (with Harron Homes specifically) Has anyone bought any of the optional extras which are not priced in the brochure, such as wine cooler, coffee machine, microwave, or ipod hub? Do you mind advising how much they cost and whether any of them were worthwhile in your opinion? Are there any optional extras you think were a rip off? Any you feel were essential? Advice/comments/specifics appreciated! Many thanks :-)

Something not advertised in the Harron extras book which in my mind makes a BIG difference is white paint. It cost us £300 as an upgrade, but well worth it in our opinion.
The show homes are all painted white, so if you want it to look like them i'd advise the spend!
For me it was by far the best extra we bought and we only knew about it because a neighbour told us :-)

Some of the other extras we had that I would also recommend are:
- alarm (saves the mess afterwards and it's a good price). - power and light to garage (if it's external). - chrome sockets and fittings look great and make a big impact. It's a big spend but a lot cheaper than trying to replace them at a later date. - the high polished floor tiles in our kitchen look GREAT! (Again it looks like the show home) . It was the biggest spend for us and we nearly didn't bother as we had been given carpets and vinyl throughout for free. We did however manage to cut a deal with harron and get some kitchen down lights for free because weren't having the vinyl in the kitchen, so that helped a little with the tile cost. - we paid £300 to upgrade our free carpets to the next level up... again, worth every penny!
I could probably think of other things, but they're certainly the ones that I wouldn't be without :-)

Thanks for those tips P99ull, much appreciated, especially the white paint tip! Wonder what else you can do which isnt on the list!? Also think your comments about the alarm and mess are spot on....
Slightly dissappointed no ones got any info around the kitchen appliances or ipod hub etc as assumed these might have been popular upgrades, but maybe not. Its hard to work out whats best hence the post to try and help and get insight into the experience of others :-)

Personally wouldn't bother with the ceiling speakers, sound system and iPod hub! Its a nice feature in the show homes but sound is better projected horizontally and technology is changing all the time so don't limit yourself with iPod.
Wireless Bose and Sonos are a better solution, you can always take them with you too if you ever move.

We got white paint also. White is easier to paint straight over when we decorate in 12 months and looks better in my opinion than the standard magnolia.
Any non standard items all you can do is ask customer services, that's what we did like having a breakfast bar built etc

Our kitchen to be has a work top which comes of the wall to seperate the kitchen and diner... I asked if that was a breakfast bar or could I do it by having a wider Worksop there and they flatly said no, they only do standard size work tops... Was annoying as show homes have breakfast bar overhangs and you don't want to have to disrupt things after wards :-(

We bought with Harron and had quite a lot of extras, as with our old house we were too late to add extras and therefore never got round to adding half of the things we had hoped to have.
We would recommend an integrated dishwasher and fridge freezer... and also carpets! (Try and get these thrown in and then upgrade for the £300.) I would also say be up front with the sort of things you want and be cheeky... I really didnt want to push for things thrown in.. im rubbish at haggling! But im so glad hubby did as we ended up feeling like we had definitely got a deal we were happy with.

Would love to know what you were "cheeky" about and what extras they threw in or moved on? Did you get any of the other integrals like microwave/wine chiller/coffee maker? Were they any good or worth it? Were you disappointed with any upgrades? Exciting times!! All help and advice appreciated :-)

NightOwl,
Do you mid me asking which house type your getting? We enquired about a kitchen island and/or breakfast bar and we were told that we could get it at our own cost/ with talks with the kitchen installer (Nationwide kitchens). We didn't go downthis route cos we wern't given their contact details until late in the build.
As for extras - I agree with P99ull. We spec'd our house up heaviley. Choosing oversized floor tiles and fully tiled bathrooms (Get your choices in early cos Harron homes can take alot of time to qet quotes and prices back).
Things that we also added are Outside tap, Rear security light and Turf to the rear (i had to really bargin for this but got it thrown in), So push for things so that you feel that you get value from your purchase.

Hi all, new to here! Looking to buy in summer but wondered about extras.
What flooring comes as standard or are they bare floorboards?
It says kitchen uplighters are standard yet they're an upgrade too. I've seen ceiling, under top cupboards and around bases. Which are included?
What's the standard shower and screen like in the main bathroom?
Does turf come as standard?
Does anyone have a breakfast bar?
What cupboard, worktop and tile choices are standard.
Thanks in advance and welcome any pics!

I think you just have to be straight and tell them what you will and won't accept if they want the sale they'll go along with you. It wasn't without some difficulties but I got what I wanted and fair play to Barratts they went along with it and were surprisingly cooperative

We had our turf done after by A1 turf rather than harron, also we are having a kitchen island built to match rest of the kitchen, we got flooring and carpets in with the house we did try to upgrade but told we were to late as choice had already gone in, so we will change them once I get the house looking how I want it, we got all our appliances in with it too but we did upgrade all the bathrooms to full tiling and it makes a massive difference... Love my bathrooms... Was going to have white walls but I'm glad I didn't now

Does anyone have a copy of the pricing list for extras please? I have lost ours from our reservation file box and am embarrassed to ask for another! Thank you all for your comments and help so far!
