"It would also avoid the need for a colossal two-mile viaduct on fractured rock at Meadowhall."
"It could, however, mean that a different set of communities will be affected by the plans.”

It is a shame for Rotherham and South Yorkshire more widely if this proves to be the case. While it will undoubtedly assist in creating more jobs in Sheffield it may not actually benefit us in Waverley and Rotherham more widely.
As a local party the collective Lib Dem position is we would prefer to have the HS2 station at Meadowhall, making it more convenient and accessible than the city centre.

Yeah... I'm guessing you don't actually live on the Waverley estate, so it wouldn't be in your back garden.... (No offence intended :-)
I for one will be hoping it goes to Sheffield. I'm happy to be a NIMBY.
Plus I travel to London on the train all the time... Knocking 20 minutes off the journey isn't really going to make much difference.

Meadowhall scrappedGood news for Waverley. Sheffield will be served via the existing line as shown in grey.

I presume the existing line it will run on to Sheffield Midland is a slow speed line?
What do people think about this? I presume good news for Waverley as the line will be going up the M18 and nowhere near Waverley.

According to the article it will cut travel time from Sheffield to London to 79 minutes, so all good with me.

I presume good news for Waverley as the line will be going up the M18 and nowhere near Waverley. Bingo. As most people (nationally) are generally indifferent or against HS2, I’d suggest that pretty much everyone in Waverley will be pretty darn happy that HS2 won’t be running over our lakes on a massive viaduct and then smashing through the top of the development before then smashing through Morrison’s and onwards. The original consultation plans for HS2 would have had a significant negative impact on Waverley, in terms of developable land and noise pollution for existing and future residents. The new proposals take HS2 several miles out of our way – which is, for us, incredibly good. Worth noting that the change in route is currently proposed, and must be approved by the secretary of state for transport later in the year. The revised plans show services peeling off the main HS2 line south of Chesterfield and then running into Sheffield via the existing midland mainline, which has a maximum speed of 140mph I believe. Still a significant journey time saving for Sheffield to London trips. There will however need to be a future connection north of Sheffield to allow high speed services to run between Sheffield and Leeds, which is not part of the HS2 proposals but would instead form part of HS3, otherwise known as the Northern Power Rail project. If these revised plans are approved by the SoS then I’ll personally be a very happy bunny.
